Sedation can help make a complex surgery much more bearable for patients. But when it comes to sedation there’s no one catch-all option. Austin Oral Surgery takes an individualized approach in determining the best sedation level, based on your surgery and comfort level. At Austin Oral Surgery we offer multiple levels of sedation. We have listed each option below as well as what you can expect:
Nitrous Oxide — Nitrous Oxide is probably the most well-known form of sedation, and is also popularly known as “laughing gas.” Is has both a euphoric and an analgesic (pain-killing) effect, decreasing anxiety and increasing comfort. It is fast acting and fast to wear off. For many people, an additional benefit is that nitrous oxide doesn’t require any sort of injection. Because it doesn’t cause you to sleep through the procedure and wears off quickly, you’re able to drive yourself home following your procedure.
Oral Sedation — Oral sedation involves taking a dose of anti-anxiety medication prior to your scheduled procedure. While it does not put the patient to sleep, oral sedation decreases anxiety, increases comfort, and often has an amnesic effect meaning that you will have little memory of your time with us. It’s important to note that with oral sedation, we do require you to arrange for someone to escort you to your appointment, remain with you in our office for the duration of your surgery, and drive you home.
Intravenous Sedation (Moderate and Deep) — At Austin Oral Surgery we offer two different types of IV sedations: moderate and deep. In a deep sedation you’ll likely sleep through the whole surgery, while with moderate you will sleep through most of the procedure. IV sedation is done by injecting the sedative through your blood stream via an IV drip. For our IV procedures we require patients to fast for eight hours prior to their scheduled surgery, and to be escorted to our office and driven home. IV sedation is the deepest level of sedation Austin Oral Surgery offers for its surgeries.
If you have any questions regarding sedation with any of the surgeries we offer, or if you would like to schedule an appointment feel free to contact Austin Oral Surgery at any time.
